March/April 2011 Newsletter

From the Director

The Rosman Center building is looking forward to spring and a facelift. The concrete service entrance ramp, ramp facade, and railing will be replaced. Zinno Construction of New Jersey was the successful bidder on the project. The funding for the project is from the library's capital construction funds which remain from the construction of the building.

This May our new building will be eight years old. We receive compliments on a daily basis about how beautiful the interior spaces are kept. Than you to our committed Custodial staff headed by Jessie Moore. The Village Branch will celebrate it's 108th birthday this fall. If you haven't been in the building, please visit.

Our main building is very busy this time of year, with the AARP tax preparers and people from all over the County who use their service, as well as with all of our adult, teen, and children's programs.

Our Village Branch is seeing great community participation in the courses offered at our Public Computer Center. We have waiting lists for the ESL and computer training classes.

Take advantage of all our programs and resources. They are paid for and supported by you, our taxpayers. Thank you for your continued support for your community library.

Think Spring!!!!

Did You Get an e-Reader for the Holidays? Take ADVANTAGE of e-Books and e-Audio!

HKDPL has recently become an OverDrive Advantage library. What does this mean to you? It means shorter waits to donwload popular e-books and e-audio titles. It means that HKDPL is purchasing access to additional copies for the exclusive use of our patrons. You won't have to wait for all the reserves placed by other libraries' patrons to be filled before you can download popular titles.

Please email us at information@hkdpl.org with suggestions for titles you would like to have available in digital download format. We are looking into some travel guides and possibly Spanish-language materials, and we'd love to hear from you about what you want. We regret that most of the digital downloads available through the Library cannot be accessed with a Kindle, but this is a decision made by Amazon. You can use the B&N Nook, the Sony E-Reader, and iPods as well as other MP3 players for e-audio downloads.

Do You Speak...MANGO??

New at the Library is the Mango Language Learning software. You’ll find a link to it in the list of online databases that you click to from our homepage. Mango gives you access to both basic and in-depth instruction in more than 30 languages, ranging from Irish to Urdu, as well as English instruction for speakers of 15 languages.

You can access Mango from the Library’s computers or from home, but wherever you are, please remember the password you set up – you’ll need it to get back in and continue with your language courses. If you create your account from home, you’ll need the HKDPL barcode number from the back of your card. Once you’ve got an account set up, you’re good to go, learning as many languages as your brain can keep track of. Just one more reason why your HKDPL card is the smartest card in your wallet.

Self-Service Fax Now Available!

We've heard your comments about our fax service being costly and a little chunky, with a librarian having to take your documents to send them by fax, and we've done something about it! We've just recently installed a Fax24 Public Fax Service. Using a credit or debit card, you will be able to send your own faxes more economically.

This new fax mchine is located in the small alcove past the Circulation Desk, next to the photocopier. When you lift the handset, you will hear step by step instructions for sending your fax. Take a look - other libraries using this service have had nothing but positive comments. It's just one more service we are pleased to offer at YOUR library.
