What makes a great movie? It's a matter of taste to be sure. Each year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences vote on one
film to recieve the coveted Academy Award for best picture. Looking back over the years, from 1929 when the Academy Awards were first
presented, we bring you some great movies that were overlooked. Movies will be shown at 1:30 pm & 6:30 pm downstairs in the
Community Room.Monday, July 7. City Lights (1931) Generally considered Charlie Chaplin's greatest film, it was not nominated for a single Academy Award. What won? Grand Hotel starring Greta Garbo. Monday, July 14. Citizen Kane (1941) The American classic by Orson Welles and called the greatest movie of all time by the American Film Institute. What won? How Green Was My Valley. Monday, July 21. Double Indemnity (1944) A hard-boiled film noir. What won? Going My Way. Monday, July 28. High Noon (1952) One of the greatest Westerns ever made. What won? Learn how to reduce the risk of falling at home, how to set realistic goals to increase activity, and how to excercise to increase strangth and balance. Advance registration required. Tuesday, July 29 & Thursday, July 31, 5 pm - 9 pmLearn defensive driving! Adjust your driving to age-related changes! Get insurance discount! You don't have to take a test! The nation's first and largest classroom refresher course geared especially to the safety needs of people age 50+. This is an 8-hour course taught in two 4 hour sessions. In person registration begins June 18 for HKDPL cardholders (please bring in your HKDPL library card). In person registration for the general public begins July 18. Tuesday, August 12, 2008Before it's too late visit historic Yankee Stadium for a classic tour. The tour includes visits to the field, dugout, press box, and historic Monument Park. This is an experience not to be missed! After touring Yankee Stadium we will travel over to Arthur Avenue for lunch at Emilia's Restaurant. Departure from library: 9 am Return: Aproximately 4:30 pm Cost: $72 per person for HKDPL cardholders and $77 per person for the general public (includes transportation, admission, lunch and all gratuities) Registration will be taken in person only and accompanied by payment, beginning May 1st. October 1 - 31, 2008Attention senior artists! Adults age 55 and older are invited to display one framed painting, drawing or photograph in our art gallery during the month of October. More details will be in our July/August newsletter. So keep painting, sketching and taking photographs, and get ready to show off your work! HKDPL TravelsOctober 16, 2008Begin the day at the Florence Griswold Museum, a National Historical Landmark, for a docent lead tour. The "Flo Gris" is birthplace of the American Impressionist Art Movement. Walk across the street to the Historic Old Lyme Inn for lunch. Right across the river we board the Essex Steam Train and meet the Essex Riverboat for a one-hour cruise. Relax and enjoy the ride while taking in some of the spectacular vistas of great natural beauty, as well as a river's eye view of Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera House. What a way to enjoy the Fall Foliage!

November 2008Senior Idol returns! Get your instruments tuned, your dancing shoes ready, and your voices warmed up. More details to come in our September/October newsletter.
