Catholic Charities Community Services

To our Neighbors, Supporters and Colleagues:

We hope that this message finds you and your families healthy and safe.

We wanted to provide a brief update on Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland in light of the COVID-19 crisis.

Warming Center

The Warming Center is being wound down for the season. To help reduce any risk to those we serve, DSS has been placing guests into alternate locations.

Eviction Prevention

The Governor has put a 90 day moratorium on evictions during this crisis.

We are continuing to work with active clients and are reaching out to our list of prior clients to check in on them and assess their situation.

Food Security

The pantry is open during the normal operating hours; every Tuesday (noon to 2 pm), Wednesday (5:30 to 7:30 pm) and Saturday (8 to 10 am). While we have fewer volunteers available to assist, at the moment we are okay in terms of appropriate staffing.

In addition, the Food Bank has ample supply for us to continue to feed our families. Families will receive pre-made bags based on family size.

There has not been a noticeable increase in the number of households requiring food thus far, however new individuals and families would be welcomed if they need support and go through the same procedures as existing families.

SNAP enrollment continues as we try to get benefits set up while the government may be increasing the available funds for that benefit.

Blessing of the Soil

As you know, we host an annual family event for the Blessing of the Soil. It is currently scheduled for Saturday, April 25th. We are exploring the option of conducting this special event through the use of a livestream broadcast over Facebook.

Hearts of Gold Gala

Currently our Hearts of Gold Gala is scheduled for Thursday, October 1st. Please save the date. Our hope is that we will be able to celebrate together at that event on that day.

General

Staff are working remotely as much as possible and are in frequent contact to make sure we are doing everything we can to serve the needs of our participants. The telephone number for assistance is 845-942-5791 and individuals will get a call back within a few hours.

Please stay well and safe during this challenging time.

Fun and Helpful Resources for Parents and Childcare Providers

Greetings!
During this time, some folks are working from home and caring for and/or homeschooling their children; some are caring for other people's children! We understand you are busy, so we've compiled some free resources to support what you are doing with the children. We hope you will find them useful. Click on the headings below to access the websites. But first, a special message from a friend:

Audible Stories
Audible Launches Audible Stories for Children and Teens While School is Out

Active Learning At Home
Helping families continue early childhood education at home.

Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems
Join Mo Willems in his studio every day for his Lunch Doodle. Draw, doodle and explore new ways of writing by visiting Mo's studio virtually once a day for the next few weeks. Grab some paper and pencils, pens, or crayons and join Mo to explore ways of writing and making together.

Caring for Each Other
Your friends on Sesame Street are here to support you and your family during the COVID-19 health crisis.....

A Fun Activities Handbook from Head Start
This handbook is full of great activities to share with children. Adults and children can do them together at home indoors and outdoors. These are wonderful developmentally appropriate activities to do at home with the children.
But, please note; we are aware there is a section of activities that suggest going out into the community. We know these are not recommended at this time.

There's No Such Thing as Online Preschool
As most preschools and early childhood centers are closed, we have become aware that companies that provide online preschool are reaching out to schools, child care programs and families.
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the professional organization for those who work with children from birth to age 8, believes that "there is no online equivalent to preschool." Please read their position here.

We are here to assist in anyway possible. Please feel free to reach out.

Best regards,

Vicki Caramante
